NASSAU| BACSWN says the proposed new aviation fee being considered for meteorological services is expected to come in well below the previously circulated $775 figure, with the final amount still to be determined.
In a statement issued September 24, BACSWN said changes in market conditions, project scope, cost modelling and business projections mean earlier figures, including $775, are “no longer relevant.”
The company added that it expects the eventual fee to be “considerably lower.”
The statement follows objections from Airlines for America, which represents major passenger and cargo carriers and has raised concerns about proposed Bahamian aviation charges, including whether users could be charged for services they say are not being provided or could duplicate services already being delivered.
BACSWN said it agrees that aviation charges should be fair, transparent and tied to services actually provided, and said its proposed charging methodology is being developed around Article 15 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation and related ICAO policies.
The company says its proposed meteorological services are intended to provide more timely and reliable weather information across approximately 174,000 square miles of Bahamian airspace, with the stated aim of improving aviation safety and operational efficiency.
For now, however, no revised fee has been announced.
