PM Davis: “Every year somebody dear, give us cause to shed a tear.”
Today, those words from the Mighty Sparrow feel especially close to home. The Caribbean has lost one of its finest sons, and calypso has lost its King.
Like so many Bahamians, I grew up knowing Sparrow’s voice. He made us laugh, challenged us, and possessed that rare ability to tell the truth about ourselves in a way only Sparrow could.
From “Jean and Dinah” to “Education,” “Slave,” and “Memories,” Sparrow recorded Caribbean history as we lived it. His words travelled across our islands and became part of our lives here in The Bahamas, too. There will never be another Sparrow.
The Bahamas joins our Caribbean family in saying farewell to Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow. My condolences go to his family and loved ones, and to the people of Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada.
Rest well, King. Today, you have given us cause to shed a tear.
