The Bahamas and the United States have reaffirmed their longstanding security partnership through the renewal of commitments tied to the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, AUTEC, on Andros.

The renewed arrangement was formalized on September 29, with the U.S. Embassy in Nassau describing the relationship between the United States Navy and Andros as one rooted in respect, environmental stewardship and support for the local community.

The development comes at a sensitive moment in Bahamas-U.S. relations, as both countries continue to navigate a public dispute over the conduct of some U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration operations in The Bahamas.

Bahamian officials have raised concerns about what they describe as unauthorized DEA activity and have stressed that any U.S. law-enforcement operations in the country must respect Bahamian sovereignty, laws and established procedures.

U.S. officials, meanwhile, have defended continued cooperation with The Bahamas on drug interdiction and broader law-enforcement matters.

The AUTEC renewal therefore stands as a separate but important signal that the wider security relationship between Nassau and Washington remains active despite tensions surrounding the DEA controversy.

AUTEC has long operated on Andros as a major U.S. Navy undersea testing and evaluation facility, making the renewed commitment significant for both bilateral security cooperation and the island’s relationship with the U.S. military.
