Former NBA star-turned-politician Rick Fox has announced that he intends to seek a leadership position within the Free National Movement, making the declaration in the Senate this afternoon in an announcement that drew audible gasps from fellow senators.
However, Fox stopped short of revealing which leadership post he intends to pursue, saying his decision was shaped by a series of recent conversations and experiences, including discussions with his mother on Montagu Beach, the FNM’s conclave over the weekend and his interaction with King Charles III during the monarch’s three-day visit to The Bahamas.
Fox said his ambition is to help build a political party worthy of the confidence of the Bahamian people, signalling his intention to play a more prominent role in the FNM’s future.
The announcement comes as the opposition party continues to reflect on its performance in the recent general election and considers its path forward.
Fox was selected as the FNM’s candidate for Garden Hills in the general election but lost to Progressive Liberal Party incumbent Mario Bowleg. Following the election, FNM leader Michael Pintard appointed Fox to serve as a senator.
His declaration of leadership ambitions could add a new dimension to discussions about the party’s future leadership and direction, particularly following the FNM’s weekend conclave, where members gathered amid questions about the party’s electoral performance and its next steps.
