San Salvador| Prime Minister Philip Davis today handed over the keys to rent-to-own homes to eleven families in Cockburn Town, San Salvador, as the government continues its push to make homeownership more accessible to Bahamians.
The homes, located in the Cockburn Town subdivision, are part of the government’s Rent-to-Own Initiative, which is designed to help families who can afford to own a home but need assistance overcoming the financial barriers to homeownership.
Davis said the initiative is about closing that gap and giving more Bahamians a realistic pathway to owning their own homes.
He said the homes being handed over represent the government’s confidence in the families receiving them and his belief that homeownership should be an achievable part of the Bahamian dream.
The Prime Minister also pointed to the government’s wider housing programme, noting developments in Abaco and progress in San Salvador, while signalling plans for additional housing initiatives in Grand Bahama and other communities across the country.
He said affordable homeownership should be within reach regardless of which island a Bahamian calls home.
Davis congratulated the eleven families on reaching what he described as an important milestone, but reminded them that owning a house is only the beginning.
He said a house becomes a home through the people who live in it, encouraging the families to build lasting memories and a strong sense of community in their new homes.
