STATEMENT BY ACTING ROAD TRAFFIC CONTROLLER DR. K. MELVIN MUNROE

The Road Traffic Department has taken note of reports that the Bahamas Taxi Cab Union does not intend to continue participating in the current discussions with representatives of the livery industry.

While every stakeholder has the right to express concerns and determine its position, the Department continues to believe that respectful dialogue is the most responsible way to resolve longstanding issues within the public transportation sector. Our door remains open, and we encourage all parties to reconsider any decision to step away from the negotiating table.

At the same time, I wish to respectfully but firmly remind all taxi and livery drivers that any protest or industrial action must remain lawful and peaceful. Blocking or intentionally impeding roads, entrances or access to airports, hotels, cruise ports, tourist attractions, public spaces or other facilities will not be tolerated. Such actions inconvenience the public, create safety risks and can negatively affect our country’s tourism product.

Under the Road Traffic Act, deliberately preventing or interrupting the free flow of traffic, or allowing a vehicle to remain in a position that causes an obstruction, is an offence. Those involved may face police intervention, prosecution and other penalties provided by law.

Where a public service driver is alleged to have intentionally used a vehicle to create an obstruction or disturbance, the Road Traffic Department may investigate that conduct. If, following a fair investigation and an opportunity for the driver to be heard, the conduct is found to warrant disciplinary action, the driver’s public service license may be suspended or revoked.

This may also affect the driver’s eligibility to retain and use a public service badge. The Department has a responsibility to ensure that all public service drivers understand the standards expected of them and the consequences of conduct that breaches the law. Holding a public service license carries an obligation to act responsibly and with due regard for the safety
and convenience of the public.

We appeal to all drivers and union representatives to respect the law and continue working toward a solution that protects their livelihoods while serving the best interests of the Bahamian public.
