BECAWU MEMBERS are getting paid whilst BUT members are asked to walk in the hot sun! Teachers should just join the BECAWU!
NASSAU| Tomorrow will be another day of some form of action from Belinda Wilson as she tries to pressure the government to yield to her.
The government was generous during negotiations and indeed Belinda had already agreed to the financial package. Go back to news footage from 2 to 3 months ago. She said 95% agreed, including the finance, just a few other articles she could not accept. So what happened? BECAWU happened!
In two months they were able to wrap up negotiations, and signed the best deal teachers ever got. They told their members and the public about their success. If Belinda signs for the same package, she gets no praise and once again will look like a second rate negotiator. That would have serious implications for the B.U.T. There membership is dwindling and is now at its lowest since the early 1980s.
BECAWU runs a clean union. Their leaders obey and enforce rules; their members pension is secured. No mis deeds with money. A sensible ethically minded teacher would see BECAWU as a viable option. In 6 years BECAWU has 900 members. These members would be in B.U.T. if BECAWU didn’t exist.
So Belinda real fight is to be relevant, stop teachers from leaving her union. So she has to demonstrate that she can do even better than BECAWU. She also wants the teachers to believe that she can bully the new Minister of Education and that the government fears her.
Don’t mind the Minister’s calm and personable demeanor; she clearly don’t know that the Viceroy is a seasoned businessman and is shrewd when it comes to negotiations.
So the students are victims of Belinda battle to keep members! NOT, the government being unreasonable. The government has agreed already to the best deal teachers ever got.
