PLP Deputy Leader Brave Davis

Davis reassures young voters the next PLP government will double the investment in Education

The following are remarks made by

Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, Deputy Leader,

Progressive Liberal Party, at the Nassau Village Branch Launch on March 24th, 2012:

Good Evening, Nassau Village!!!

Are you ready, Nassau Village!!!

Are you ready to get rid of this worthless FNM government?

Mr. Party Leader…etc

To Dion Smith, the next Member of Parliament for Nassau Village – and Mrs. Smith.

Team Nassau Village!!

If we needed any reassurance that the entire Bahamas has gone GOLD, you are certainly providing it for us tonight.

Oh, what a wonderful sight!!!

It is quite clear that you are ready to get rid of this inept, uncaring and corrupt FNM government.

Amazingly, despite their disgracefully shabby record, they have the gall to brag about what they’ve accomplished and what they have delivered.

You know and I know that in their advertisements, most of the projects that they boast of having delivered were initiated by the PLP.

Nassau Village!

I have been holding investigations on that Cookie Jar and tonight I want to share with you what I have uncovered.

Just go up Fox Hill Road to the east of us.

There you will find The Robert Smith Child and Adolescent Centre and Special Education Unit project under construction at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre.

That project was approved when I served as Chairman of NIB.

We signed a contract to construct that facility for 7.1 million dollars. The project was designed to assist in expanding our healthcare network.

When the FNM came to power they stopped construction.

The building was more than 60 percent completed at the time.

The building sat without activity for three years.

One month before the by-election in Elizabeth, another contact was signed to complete the project to the tune of 8.1 million dollars.

Let me repeat: the building was more than 60% complete. And now it is costing more than the original price to construct.

Telco Enterprises was awarded the contract even though it was the highest bidder for the work.

The lowest bidder came in at 6.5 million, and was rejected!

The new contract for 8.1 million dollars called the works to be completed by February 2011.

Today is March 24th, 2012 and the building is yet to open.

And that’s not all.

I found out two weeks ago the contact that was to be completed for 8.1 million dollars is now costing you the taxpayers over 12 million dollars.

That’s 4 million plus dollars more for a building, which still cannot open.

They have their hands, feet and head down in the cookie jar.

The FNM Government:-

Found 12 million dollars to complete a building that was 60 percent completed that was originally costing 7.1 million dollars.

– Found money – 2.2 million dollars to throw sand on the beach!

– They found 28 million dollars to give to 19 wealthy families – public money – to organize the New Port.

-They will soon find almost 100 million dollars more to fund a poorly managed road project. – In cost overruns.

Yet, the Prime Minister has the gall to ask us how we will find the money to invest – to educate young Bahamians!

LET ME SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THESE ROADS!

NO one knows better than you here in the East the frustrations and headaches that they have delivered as a result of the disastrous New Providence Road Improvement Project.

Roads have been dug up all over the place.

Crippling small businesses, which were forced to shut their doors and layoff workers.

Tonight, no one knows when the road nightmare will end.

They said it will be completed by January of this year.

Then they said June of this year.  Reports now say it may be completed sometime in 2013.

Even more vexing is the escalating cost of this nightmare project. The price tag has moved from $113 million to a striking $206 million; with overrun of more than $93 million.

AND THEY HAVE THE GALL TO ASK HOW WE WILL DOUBLE THE INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION?

Nassau Village,

Your job is to send OUR MAN – YOUR MAN – Dion Smith to sit in Parliament!

We need Dion on the team formulating our programs and plans to get The Bahamas moving in the right direction.

Dion believes in you Nassau Village!

He is among the cadre of our new generation of leaders.

He is no stranger to you.

He has been campaigning in this area for a number of years and has shared his views on how he will provide stellar representation.

Nassau Village! Dion is no Johnny Come Lately!

He is a strong family man! A hard worker and he is loyal!

As your MP, Dion will be working with the next PLP government to implement smart, innovative policies.

Programs like Project Safe Bahamas, which will embed our renewed focus on Urban Renewal 2.0 aimed at connecting community partnerships with government agencies.

The first Pindling PLP Government made a major commitment to Education.

And your next Government led by the Rt. Hon. Perry Gladstone Christie, will commit to doubling that investment for the young people all across the country.

Just as we created BTVI and opened the new technical school in this community, your next PLP government will expand these opportunities for the nation’s youth.

We will expand funding to young Bahamians seeking studies in the fields of agriculture, marine science, hospitality management, engineering, construction technology, and electronics.

THE PLP OF 1967 TO 1992 EMPHASIZED ACCESS TO AND EXPANSION OF EDUCATION.  TODAY’S PLP WILL FOCUS ON EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION.

And providing the resources and facilities to achieve it.

Nassau Village!

Elections are about the future!

WE ARE THE PARTY OF THE FUTURE – … And we with our leader Perry Gladstone Christie will build a bright future for all Bahamians.

Ingraham brags about being a decisive leader:

Yes he is decisive: Decisively wrong,
Decisively reckless
And Decisively Uncaring!

We need a man that cares, a man that listens and thinks before he acts!

A man who puts Bahamians first.

Christie is that Leader!

That man of the opposite party who leads us now says what we believe in – cannot be done!

He tells the nation doubling the investment in young Bahamians – cannot be done!

He tells the nation investing more in education – cannot be done!

He tells the nation creating 10,000 new jobs for young Bahamians – cannot be done!

He tells the nation to restore peace back to our streets – cannot be done!

He tells the nation attracting new investments to create new 21st Century jobs for Bahamians – cannot be done!

He says to believe in the Bahamas and Bahamians – is something that cannot be done!

Well tonight – as we lift the hand of another young man –

JOIN ME IN TELLING THAT MAN WHO FAILS TO BELIEVE IN YOU …

YES WE CAN! – YES WE CAN! – YES WE CAN!

Are you ready for a government that believes in Bahamians?

Are you ready for a government that will put Bahamians first?

Are you ready, Nassau Village?

Then come with us as we move to restore peace to our streets!

Come with us as we set a course to Put Bahamians Back to Work!

Come with us as we point young Bahamians into an era of prosperity and growth!

Come with us as we build our nation and restore opportunity to thousands of our countrymen and women.

Come with us as we restore JOB OPPORTUNITIES back into this economy and new business opportunities for all our people.

Come with us, and send Dion Smith to the Parliament!

PLP….PLP…..PLP

Thank You, Nassau Village, and God Bless …
