Three straight terms for a single governing party could be achieved with a deeply divided Opposition!

I must admit, I really missed the Former Prime Minister’s voice in the Halls of Parliament. Like it or not, when Dr. Hubert Minnis speaks, Bahamians listen. His recent outcry against Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) and the Bahamas Grid Company (BGC) regarding the electrical grid is a prime example. Calling their suggestions “nonsense”—specifically the claims that everyday items like pool pumps and electric vehicle (EV) chargers are causing severe strain on our grid—resonated with many. As the good Doctor sharply noted, at the rate we are going, BGC and BPL may soon add that “we should not charge our phones” at night.
I really thought Dr. Minnis would be a finished politician after the 2021 election, but I am thoroughly enjoying his style in opposition. He speaks directly to the Bahamian psyche; it is real, down-home, and plain-spoken. I truly believe the Bahamian populace will give Mr. Minnis another chance at leadership under one vital condition: he must apologize. If he addresses the public directly and owns up to his past missteps—specifically the 12% VAT increase, the immense pressure that Hurricane Dorian put on his administration, and the dramatic overreach during the COVID-19 pandemic—voters will listen. The Bahamian people are notoriously forgiving to their politicians when there is genuine accountability.
I would like to see Former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis back in office, even if just to rebut the crazy statements coming from BGC’s spokesmen. Right now, the PLP have returned to office in dramatic fashion, and the “powers that be” are doing whatever they can to control the narrative.
The opposition is at a critical crossroads. If the Coalition of Independents (COI) and the Free National Movement (FNM) do not join forces and amend their internal differences, the fractured opposition will hand the government a historic victory. If they remain divided, I foresee something we have not witnessed since Sir Lynden Pindling used his powerful political machinery: three straight terms for a single governing party. It is time for Dr. Minnis to bridge the gap, apologize to the nation, and offer the strong, down-home opposition this country desperately needs.
