Letter to BP: ARCHER CALLS FOR PROBE into 15 year-old death

I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH RECENT EVENTS AT THE EAST STREET SOUTH POLICE STATION.  JUST EIGHT WEEKS AGO A REPORT (written BY Mr. Paul Turnquest) SURFACES  ABOUT A YOUNG MAN WHO LIVES IN PINEWOOD WHO WAS SEVERELY BEATEN (while being detained at the east street south police station)AND SPENT WEEKS IN THE HOSPITAL RECOVERING (Mr. Cartwright) AND NOW OVER THE WEKEND A 15 YEAR OLD WAS BEATEN AND FOUND HANGING IN HIS HOLDING CELL.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT TO SAVAGELY BEAT OR KILL WHO EVER THEY VIEW AS A THREAT WITHIN VARIOUS COMMUNITIES.  THIS YOUNG MAN WAS A MINOR AND I AM CERTAIN AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL WILL GET INVOLVED IN THIS CASE.  HOW CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THE DEATH OF A MINOR IN A GUARDED HOLDING CELL.

EVERY OFFICER IN THAT STATION NEEDS TO BE PUT ON CHARGE IMMEDIATELY AND RELIEVED OF THEIR DUTIES UNTIL SOMEBODY ATARTS TALKING.  I WAS TOLD HE WAS BEATEN AND DENIED MEDICAL TREATMENT.  THIS BEING TRUE THE CHARGE OF MURDER WOULD BE RATHER APPROPRIATE FOR THE OFFICERS CONCERNED.

I AM PUBLICLY CALLING ON COMMISSIONER REGINALD FERGUSON TO BRING ORDER TO HIS POLICE FORCE AND MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF THESE OFFICERS OR HE MUST RESIGN.  IT’S BEEN QUITE SOME TIME SINCE THE MURDER OF ARSENIO MORTIMER THE YOUNG MAN WHO WAS MERCILESSLY SHOT IN THE BACK BY A POLICE OFFICER ON MARCH 31ST, 2009 AND YET NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED .  NOT TO FORGET THE YOUNG MAN IN PRIDE ESTATES WHO WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD BY POLICE AFTER A HIGH SPEED CHASE.  WAS IT NOT CHIEF SUPERINTENDANT HULAN HANNA WHO SAID POLICE OFFICERS ARE TRAINED TO SHOOT TO KILL?  THIS STRATEGY IS BARBARIC   THIS SI NT RIGHT.

NO OFFICERS ARE ABUSING THEIR GIRL FRIENDS AND SPOUSES WITHOUT THE FEAR OF PROSECUTION.  IS THE COMMISSIONER TRYING TO CREATE A POLICED STATE?  IF SO THEN THERE WILL BE A LOT MORE BLOODSHED.  I THINK IT WAS A MISTAKE TO ALLOW COMMISSIONER REGINALD FERGUSON TO REMAIN AS POLICE CHIEF FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.  ASP GREENSLADE OR ASP MARVIN DAMES ARE BETTER SUITED.  I THINK COMMISSIONER FERGUSON MUST NOW LEAVE BEFORE HE IS FORCED TO DO SO.

HE NEEDS TO TAKE HIS PENSION AND GET DAMN LOST.  WE MUST DEMAND JUSTICE FOR BAHAMIANS WHO FALL VICTIM TO THIS CRUEL SYSTEM OF POLICE BRUTALITY WITHOUT FAIL.  IT’S BEEN NEARLY TWO YEARS NOW THAT DESMOND KEY HAS DIED FROM A BAD BEATEN FROM POLICE AND YET THE OFFICERS ARE NOT IN PRISON.  WHAT NEXT ?  DO YOU THEY WANT CIVILIANS TO TURN THEIR GUNS ON THE POLICE AND START KILLING THEM RRATHER THAN EACH OTHER?  THAT IS WHERE WE ARE HEADED IF SOMETHING ISN’T DONE AND DONE RATHER SOON.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH…

  1. Blame Reggie ass he does not apparently believe in partnering with the community.Hardcore policing is out just ask Jamaica.I have never heard this man espousing Community Policing. He is a bad fit and persons follow the Leader who is out of step.

  2. LOU :Good day to ALL..Just a few months ago, I made some comments about our Police Force and what I saw it turning into – “THE GESTAPO”. Some persons on this blog laughed at me and told me that I was basically too animated ! Well, some of the things I talked about “have come home to roost”.. I warned about the path our police wrre taking ! I’ll say something else – if a grip is not taken on this situation soon – some people WILL..take matters into their hands! I, certainly, do NOT, want to see that day…I was present at a police facility, when an officer told a young man leaving the premises that, “Boy, they did’nt beat you? You lucky, eh, ’cause I would have beaten you bad” Like I have been saying, “heaven help us”. And I must warn, that I believe that there are more weapons and I mean more sophisticated weapons on our streets, than what our Police Force has…

If this foolishness continues one day the chickens will be home to roost. The police cannot be treating people in such a manner, one day they will get tired of being treated like this and revolt.

  4. Their shallow selfish minds blinded them to the political bait set out by this administration. now that respected PLP MP’s have succeeded relative to making this a political, the FNM is going to take the humane road and ask the question, what’s more important, “Politics or the live of Bahamian Citizens? The PLP will lose this argument and will further shift the mindset of Bahamians. The motivation of greed, surpasses the pursuit of trustworthyness. As men are wise, so are they ignorant.

  5. @Omar Archer Sr.
Last night I went to the PLP rally and was quite disappointed. I thought we were there to gather in support for the family of Michael Knowles.

Archer I am sorry that it took you so long to realize what was afoot yesterday!!! Michael Knowles death was merely the vehicle used by some to get where they wanted to go! People saw an opportunity and took it.

Whoever interferred with that Mother meeting with the Minister yesterday is so wrong! Political Milage was and still is the order of the day!

I applaud you for being honest and calling it as you see it.

  6. Last night I went to the PLP rally and was quite disappointed. I thought we were there to gather in support for the family of Michael Knowles. If that being the case why were party MP’s telling party supporters to come downtown today wearing their PLP shirts? I am very disappointed that our party officials have missed the ball on this one. It’s not about support for the party, it’s about speaking up for justice on behalf of Michael Knowles’ family. Similar to what I did for the family of Desmond Key. I made sure at all times before I made any public statements that I met with the family to discuss their views. This is just not right and I intend to stay away from Parliament for this reason. I am not going out there to support Glenys Hanna Martin. We should be rallying as a people to argue for the rights of Bahamian citizens who have repeatidly fallen victim to police brutality. The message has been lost and I am totally against this type of action. Hanna Martin should know much better than this. Fight for the people not political milage. Real talk.

  7. This indeed a very unfortunate situation. I scared to comment, however, as I dont want the cops to come for me like what they did to Glenyss.

  8. Reggie has got to go as he is a mistake. All the gains made on the Force by paul Farquharson appear to be lost. The new COP is a figurehead and appears to have no experience.I hope that the civilian board setup has been given the authority to act on the most unfortunate situation immediately.I have relatives on the Force and Reggie is endangering their lives with his ineptness.Fire Reggie now as he is not in tune with present day ways of the Police dealing with the public.Talk about knucklehead we have one in the COP who as I pointed out on another blog has again been condemned by authorities. It did not have to be like this.

  9. This case should not be investigated by the local police, because if they do the truth will never come out. No matter how Mr.Hulan Hanna tries to spin it, there will be a cover up.

  10. If we are not careful we could end up with a revolution on our hands, there are too many cases of police brutality. One day the chickens will come home to roost.

  11. Omar for once you make some sense. I want to draw your attention to the headline in the Guardian this morning, where a Justice slams Reginald Ferguson and ASP fernander for tainting a witness statement. Why havent they been charged?. Ferguson needs to go forthwith.

  12. Omar welcome back,I agree with you a proper investigation should been done. You said that the Police may have been given the green light to beat and kill.I don’t think the Commissioner Ferguson(Pastor)would give them the ok to.As I said eariler that ACP Greenslade would be the best man for the job as Commissioner,GOD help us.Tell Tommy stop playing politic and put the right man in the chair.
