NASSAU| Minister of Urban Renewal and Community Affairs Lisa Rahming is pointing to a series of community-based initiatives as early results of her first 100 days in office, with a focus on improving homes, empowering residents and expanding opportunities for Bahamians.
Rahming says the Ministry’s work is centred on people — from vulnerable homeowners and small contractors to women, persons with disabilities and families affected by disasters.
One of the major initiatives was a Small Home Repairs Contractors’ Workshop, which drew more than 400 Bahamian contractors.
The training focused on accountability, professionalism and quality workmanship, with government agencies providing guidance on compliance and doing business with the government.
Rahming says the programme is about more than awarding contracts.
“This Ministry will not be measured simply by the number of contracts we award. We will be measured by the lives we improve,” she said.
The Small Home Repairs Programme provides assistance to vulnerable Bahamians for roof repairs and other minor renovations aimed at making homes safer, and extends to communities throughout the Family Islands.
Rahming also represented The Bahamas at the United Nations in New York, where she advocated for inclusive, resilient and people-centred communities during discussions on the New Urban Agenda.
Back home, the Ministry mobilised assistance for families displaced by a fire in Bimini, collecting clothing, food, toiletries and other essentials after the July 8 blaze affected at least five homes and nearly 20 residents.
The Ministry has also focused on empowerment.
Women in Bamboo Town participated in a hands-on automotive workshop, learning basic skills including how to change a tyre, check engine oil and carry out routine vehicle checks.
And persons with disabilities received employment training covering résumé preparation, interview techniques and workplace conduct.
Rahming says the initiatives reflect a broader approach to urban renewal — one that goes beyond physical development to strengthen communities and equip Bahamians with the tools and support they need to improve their lives.
