More Grand Bahamians hit the hard pavement of unemployment – recession deepening – Department of Statistics mussy reading the numbers upside down eh?

Freeport, Bahamas – Speculation yesterday is now confirmed on the island of Grand Bahama, where 19 Bahamians at GB Power were axed today while foreigners stay on the job! Something gata be wrong with dat!

Late this afternoon the company confirmed BP’s story and issued this statement:

The Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) is working hard to become a more reliable and efficient utility for our customers across Grand Bahama Island.

In order to bring improvements to our operations and stabilize energy costs for customers, Grand Bahama Power Company is reorganizing roles and accountabilities throughout the organization.

The company announced today that specific roles within GBPC’s operations have been eliminated, resulting in nineteen redundancies. Those affected were advised in one-on-one meetings today, and all of those impacted have received fair remuneration and support to assist them as they move forward.

As expressed to our impacted employees, we are deeply grateful for their years of service to our organization. Indeed, we are grateful to all of our employees for their commitment to our business, our customers, and to working safely.
